Lorna Smith, the wife of British Virgin Islands Premier Orlando Smith, has been appointed interim director of the recently opened BVI office in Hong Kong.
The Premier has form in this regard, having previously awarded a company managed by his wife a consultancy contract for USD 100.000. Premier Smith said at the time: “I do not believe that professionals should be shut out simply on account of their family relationships with politicians”.
The opening of the BVI Hong Kong office last Thursday seems to have been well attended. Talking to Bloomberg television, the Premier denied that BVI was seeking to expand its business in Asia to avoid the US clamp-down on tax evasion via FATCA.
